HIX Soho 1

Squaremeal Review of HIX Soho ?

For grown-up class with a hefty dollop of style and heritage, this original from Mark Hix still cuts it. Eclectic modern Brit art, white tablecloths, low lighting and high ceilings create a "perfect combination of cool and down-to-earth" that ensures a packed house throughout the week. Meanwhile, the patriotic menu keeps it seasonal and regional: try Glenarm Estate ox tongue with pickled shallots and chickweed or garlic-laced Somerset morels on toast, before ample Launceston lamb cutlets surrounded by cockles, rosemary-dressed John Dory or grilled Moyallon pork chop with hedgerow garlic 'green sauce'. Also stay for the decadent Peruvian chocolate mousse, sea buckthorn posset or perhaps a subterranean snifter in Mark's Bar. We noted some flak in 2015, but recent reports suggest it's back on form: "well done the whole team", exclaim one group of happy diners.

Sorry- can't muster much enthusiasm

Jul 2016

First visit today at lunch and plainly restaurants which cater primarily for young people don't really warm up till well after we left at 2. I didn't find much to wax lyrical about to be honest. The premises aren't terribly exciting, the service is decent .We both chose from the a la carte menu I found my shellfish soup a little odd- the soup and the pieces of shellfish in it seemed to have been cooked separately- the pieces of fish were tasty enough but the soup itself was over-thickened...

Hix Soho........

by   (2)

Jul 2016

Hix Soho is buzzing with a mix of modern types and those with a penchant for the fish/seafood that Hix is renowned for. Mark's bar downstairs is cool, dark and fabulous for pre-dinner or just for cocktails at the bar( for drinks only, you get hit with a £2 per head licensing charge ! never seen that before!). The monkfish curry was amazing, but i had the posh fishfingers.....but seriously, they need to sort out their chips.....pale, unremarkable and generally forgettable. I left half...

The perfect combination of cool and down to earth. Great British food, excellent service and contemporary ambiance. Mark's Bar downstairs is one of the best bars in Soho and is perfect for pre- and post-dinner cocktails.

Quality Soho eatery

by   bronze reviewer (6)

Oct 2014

Hix is classy. The price tag goes with that too - but at lunchtime you can take advantage of the excellent set menu at only £19.50 for two courses, which is very good value. I had 'Breaded Indian Rock chicken escalope with a fried Burford Brown egg and capers'. I was impressed with all the adjectives for what was basically chicken escalope, egg and chips, but it was very tasty and well presented. Similarly, Ronnie's Bramley Apple Pie was just apple pie, but clearly Ronnie, the...

Less YBA, more 'why would you'?

by   platinum reviewer (70)

Oct 2014

From the onset, I feared Hix may be a wrongun; if not a wrongun, then a bloated and misunderstood party boy waking up with a hangover… and finding himself in the wrong decade. Thursday night: we were greeted by a tetchy hoard of suits at the door that bristled as we (rightfully) sauntered past to our reserved table. This first impression was telling, as the place appears to have disappeared irretrievably up its own a**e. All that posturing soon becomes really rather joyless. When we took in...

Hix Soho Saturday lunch. Behind a spooky looking door you will find a great restaurant and a brilliant basement bar. Food was very good, service ok, good overall vibe in the Restaurant with interesting artwork. Nice to find Rye Bay seafood on the menu. delicious!

Hix dinner for 2

by   (1)

Feb 2014

Restaurant is really nice inside, decorated very cool. We sat at a table for two, very close to another couple on a table for two so we felt we had to whisper a little bit. Food was very nice, bit overpriced though as we had steak and fish and they were both fairly average really. Lovely starters and pudding though and the Hix Fix cocktail is delish!

Very average

by   (1)

Jan 2014

At £60 a head for two of us we expected more. The food is average, service poor (very slow and not overly attentive) and the tables for two are very close together. Overall we considered value for money poor here given the number of modern british restaurants across London. Atmosphere was good and probably better for groups rather than couples.

Half a Slice of Toast :: Half a Slice of Toast | Hix and Mark's bar

Along Brewer Street, under a red neon sign and through a huge wooden door, you’ll find Hix, an up-market brasserie serving modern British fare. There are several establishments under the Hix family name, all owned and founded by Mark Hix. I’d been the his bar (aptly named Mark’s bar) a couple of times before. It’s located in the basement, under Hix Soho, but I’d always passed over food here and headed downstairs for a drink instead. Mark’s bar itself is lovely; softly lit with comfy leather sofas and a dipped bar so you can watch the mixologists work their magic. It has a great atmosphere and is perfect for cocktails...

The Swindian :: Hix Soho | good food, middling service | The Swindian

Having been to Tramshed before and knowing Mark Hix’s excellent reputation, we were intrigued and excited as we sat down. It took us an age to decide what we wanted, which was partly due to the misguided direction of our first waitress, who didn’t seem to understand the terms of the voucher. We were led to believe we could order any starter or main course, which later proved to be false. We were also told too late that there was only one cocktail for us…

The decor in Hix Soho is somewhat confusing. There is a beautiful oyster bar and live jazz music, a goose hanging from the ceiling and a profane Hemingway...
