SquareMeal Review of Hawksmoor Spitalfields

Spitalfields is where it all started for Hawksmoor founders Will Beckett and Huw Gott in 2006 and while their newer restaurants became ever-more glamorous, this blueprint was still recognisably a City steakhouse. A recent refurb has brought it into line with its glossy siblings with acres of green leather and an all-round sheen, but what still sets Hawksmoor apart from the competition it spawned is the hubbub of happy diners anticipating some of the best steak in London, smoky from the chargrill and imbued with more character than the cast list of Game of Thrones. Non-carnivores should investigate such fresh-tasting treats as a mound of white crab meat piled on to thin crumpets, or three breadcrumb-scattered scallops served in the shell with a white port and garlic sauce. There’s no denying that Hawksmoor is expensive, but portions are so big that a steak and a couple of sides (treacle-sweet bacon, squeaky spring greens) should hit the spot for most appetites – though who could resist the lure of peanut butter shortbread topped with a smooth scoop of salted-caramel ice cream and concealing a well of syrupy sauce?

A repeat visit to Hawksmoor fulfilled our expectations. Our server ‘ Ulisses’ was charming, attentive and entertaining. Let's be honest this isn't the cheapest lunch around, but hey it was a Birthday so we didn't stint. lobster starter had a smokey BBQ edge and was moist and delicious. We all ordered steaks( various cuts) . Each delivered promptly and cooked as requested. excellent Rioja and superb atmosphere. Having dined at several of the Hawksmoor chain this is our absolute favourite.

My friend did not only book my birthday dinner at Hawksmoor but also planned a surprise party and the people at Hawksmoor made it very special. From the lovely waitress to the excellent food, it was a night to remember and I do believe that we closed the bar.

Having rocked up to Hawksmoor Spitalfields (with Goodman's, this is my joint first in the “best ever steakhouse in London”-award) with a colleague, we had a phenomenal T-bone and a very decent bottle of Rioja. Service was excellent, everything tasted great and was executed flawlessly and I cant wait to go back. We did have a bit of fun in the place drinks-wise, but even then the bill was a bit of a sobering experience. It was self-inflicted, so hard to argue with and worth it anyway. Go there now, order half a cow and be happy!

Fantastic steak, great staff, good wine list. I love Hawksmoor. Steaks at Goodman are as good, but Hawksmoor has much nicer atmosphere – cool, but without trying to be. Side dishes are great, too, as are the ice creams: cornflake and popcorn both delicious. Best bet is to go in bigger group (3-4 minimum), then order few different cuts – love the way they're presented, too, for everyone to dig in and share.

I've been wanting to come here for a while now as i have heard good review after good review, but i didn't come here for the steak, oh no no no the burger was at the top of my want list. The bacon cheese burger arrived on our table and i was like a kid in a candy store, the bun was fluffy and light, the meat tender and juicy, each bite was meet with a groan , it was food porn, the triple cooked chips were really nice to, and went well with the Hawksmoor homemade ketchup. The wife had the beef roast and she claimed it was the best roast dinner she has ever had, and that's saying a lot. So onto the staff, the staff were all very friendly and looked after us pretty well, so all in all our Hawksmoor experience was a good one.

A must for any serious carnivore! Simply the best cooked steak in town – just make sure you get there early enough before the chalk board gets wiped and that juicy Porterhouse is gone forever! Plus, the cocktails are simply amazing…particularly if ‘Shaky’ Pete is in residence. This is a man that can make a serious cocktail. This is THE place to take a lover of meat! Accept no substitutions and just go and have a pre-dinner cocktail, order a Porterhouse (medium-rare) and feel the smile spread across your face in satisfaction!

This Spitalfields branch is where the Hawksmoor story all started and in 2018 it was treated to a full refurb to bring it into line with the approachable glamour of its smart siblings. The brick-lined, herringbone floored back area of the restaurant can be cordoned off to create a private area seating 55, while groups of up to 10 can be seated in the booths in the basement cellar bar, which also makes a great pre-meal rendezvous for the restaurant’s famous cocktails. While Hawksmoor’s meat is legendary (the steaks are some of the best in London), there’s also a good showing of fish dishes to please non-carnivores, and also vegetarian options.
