SquareMeal Review of
Discreetly nestled away in Spitalfields, the original branch of the seemingly unstoppable Hawksmoor chain has a definite old-school speakeasy vibe, which is further enhanced by the super-cool den-like bar downstairs (a must-visit). “Unbeatable steak in London” just about sums it up, and readers confirm that the well-hung, well-aged British beef “never disappoints”. Although the steaks themselves are massive, we suggest an opener of say, Brixham crab on toast, before hitting the serious stuff – perhaps share a mighty rib-eye with sides of triple-cooked chips, creamed spinach and Stilton hollandaise (although some say the mac ‘n’ cheese is “irresistible”). If you have any room left for dessert, don’t skip the rich sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream. A strong selection of wines is available by the glass, the cocktails are unfailingly innovative and prices are reasonable for the area too. In short, a cracking package that delivers on food, drinks, service and atmosphere.
