SquareMeal Review of
Great North Wood
This substantial inn with its handsome Georgian frontage has been feeding and watering the good folk of West Norwood since 1712, and it now comes complete with a ”lovely” beer garden for fine-weather imbibing. One reader reckons it serves “the best pub grub around” – not surprising, given that the chefs have worked in venues ranging from Terroirs to The Glasshouse in Kew. Look for the likes of beetroot hummus with feta, pomegranate and flatbread, mussels in leeks and cider with chips or smoked pork chop with celeriac purée, caramelised apple and kale alongside the usual burgers, beer-battered haddock, pies and steaks. You can book ahead for big sharing dishes such as slow-cooked lamb boulangère, while puds might bring pannacotta with poached rhubarb. Meanwhile, bottled beers from a host of London breweries catch the eye behind the bar, in addition to an assortment of big international names.
