There’s some “great value” Vietnamese street food on offer here, so don’t let Café East’s location on a soulless retail park put you off. Within the large brick building is a brightly lit room of minimal design, but there’s plenty to keep your taste buds interested – try cha gio (pork spring rolls with mint, coriander and fish sauce) or bah chuon (steamed pastries topped with meatloaf) for starters. Big bowls of pho are the main event, loaded with slices of rare beef and flat rice noodles gently steamed in deeply savoury broth, pepped up with herbs, lime wedges and fresh chilli. You’ll find chicken and prawn versions too, plus decent curries, rice and fried noodle dishes on the 30-dish menu. The place is unlicensed, but the pho is so cleansing, you’ll want to stick to water or herb tea. No bookings, but credit cards now accepted.
