Bubba Gump Shrimp Co

SquareMeal Review of Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.

Inspired by the film Forrest Gump, this jazzy seafood chain is a staple in the USA and now it's arrived in London’s Trocadero – its first appearance this side of the Atlantic. Launched in 1996, Bubba Gump now has more than 40 locations spread across the North America, Japan and South-East Asia, but one formula fits all – family-style eateries specialising in shrimp dishes and other seafood classics, plus a big dollop of Southern and Cajun cuisine (both Forrest and his buddie ‘Bubba’ Blue were from Alabama). Typical stateside favourites include popcorn shrimps, seafood hush-pups, ‘dumb luck’ coconut shrimp with Cajun marmalade and meaty plates of jambalaya, Dixie-style back ribs and Southern-fried chicken. London can expect the same, with back-up from luscious desserts such as choc-chip cookie sundae or mama’s bread pudding.

In the former premises of the old Planet Hollywood this enormous upstairs eaterie is styled in Southern Hamburger Joint style with numerous Screens etc. Plenty of room and seating options with many nooks and crannies. On a quiet weekday in Leicester Square was the ideal time to visit. Downstairs a shop selling imported USA souvenir merchandise.Forrest Gump Movie themed throughout. Upstairs the huge Diner. I was a bit sceptical of the fried menu at first but soon found some things to order. Star of the show a flashing souvenir acrylic tumbler of Cherryade with a Maraschino cocktail cherry ON A STALK was enough for me!Delicious with ice.The tumbler was cleaned after use included in the price of the drink and you can take it home.Wowzer!" The dishes came quick were hot in iron skillets and extra sample sauces were provided free on request though not part of dishes id ordered!Super! I really began to feel like A Super Star! Be Bop A LuLa blasting out over the PA added to the "feel". Macaroni Cheese very nice-a tad salty- Only down side prices a tad high-a snack and drink etc came to over £25 with service which might have got a classic meal eg at The Critereon. but then I suppose you pay for being at the centre of The West End universe. A one off thrill. Would go again though soonish.
