Britannia Monument Street London city bar pub restaurant

SquareMeal Review of Britannia Monument Street

The new Britannia received a £250k makeover in 2016 from its owners (who also run the Slug & Lettuce chain), creating an attractive cod-Edwardian basement taproom. The pub is strategically positioned to corral City commuters streaming over London Bridge; weary workers are also lured by wine at only £10.75 (for palatable Tempranillo), Piper Heidsieck Champagne (£33.75) and craft beers such as Innis & Gunn and Hogstar (discounted on Wednesdays). A 2am licence on Thursday and Friday is another magnet. Add party pitchers of Woo Woo and Long Island Iced Tea (£12.25), and a DJ, and you’ll get an idea of the vibe as the evening shift extends beyond midnight. A mega-screen shows sport, but sanctuary can be found in the cosy book-lined booths off the dining room. Grub is a mixture of deep-fill sarnies, stone-baked pizzas, steaks, calorie-counter specials (aubergine bake, say) and hearty budget comfort food: chicken jalfrezi (£7.99).
