SquareMeal Review of
Dizzy Gull at Brighton Beer Dispensary
This joyful independent boozer keeps hopheads happy with an epic range of craft ales, but foodies are now satisfied too – by the seriously sexy bar snacks. The latter come courtesy of cutting-edge Brighton restaurant The Set, which has recently taken over the kitchen. There are several good reasons to order the burger, not least the bacon jam, Dr Pepper onions and blue-cheese sauce, but the dish is tame compared to a ‘duck sarnie’ special, which combines confit duck, peanut butter, kimchi and miso mayo. Other highlights include oxtail nuggets with mushroom ketchup, crispy deep-fried ‘beerkins’ and beer-braised beef cheeks with vindaloo mash: fun and filling food. The changing line-up of craft beers makes an ideal accompaniment, sourced from some of Britain’s best indie breweries, such as Tiny Rebel, Northern Monk and local heroes Brighton Bier (whose pale ale is a riot of flavour and less than 5% ABV).
