Squaremeal Review of Bao Fitzrovia ?

Hot on the heels of Bao Soho, this second restaurant sticks to the blueprint: contemporary Taiwanese small plates served in an intimate dining space. In contrast to Soho, Fitzrovia’s open kitchen, as well as a bar nestled in the middle of a giant sharing table, results in a more dynamic and inclusive dining experience. After ticking off our choices on the paper menu, we ate our way through a steady stream of served-when-ready dishes. Xiao-chi (appetisers) include crispy prawn heads dipped in mayonnaise and fried chicken chop, served alongside egg yolk and hot sauce. The famed soft-steamed buns don’t disappoint and the confit pork belly option, paired with crispy shallots and soy-pickled chilli, gets the flavour and spice balance just right. A concise list of cocktails named after Taiwanese films offers the perfect accompaniment to this affordable comfort food. If you have room for dessert (these are deceptively filling small plates), a refreshing chocolate and toasted rice milkshake ably offsets the flavour-packed mains. Servers on our visit were knowledgeable and attentive, but with bookings only taken for groups of at least four, you’ll probably be queuing to get in – Bao’s greatest drawback is its own popularity.

Bao 1 or Bao 2?

by   gold reviewer (41)

Sep 2016

It was definitely going to be a comparison between both the Baos. That was why I had to think about which and why was it that I preferred one to the other. Was it the first because it set the precedence? Or was it the second because the second lived up to it? It was a bit of both. The style of food was very similar. I felt I enjoyed the first Bao because it gave a better insight to what they could do beyond baos. On the other hand, I also enjoyed the second Bao because of their unique combination...

The Picky Glutton :: Bao Fitzrovia

Fitzrovia has always had more than its fair share of restaurants given the relatively small size of this neighbourhood, hemmed in by Bloomsbury, Soho and Marylebone. Even so, the area has bloomed in recent years with some top notch restaurants opening in Fitzrovia from the revamped Newman Arms to Piquet and, of course, the famed Dabbous. Even the merely satisfactory restaurants are often better than many of the the overhyped eateries in other parts of the capital.

    Vi Vian :: Bao Fitzrovia

Bao, Fitzrovia – the only solution to beating the crowd in a non-reservation restaurant is to go early. I could not forsee myself having dinner as early as 17:30 hours and to queue for 90 minutes like I did before. We went for lunch. With babies, push chairs and the girls. Luckily, Cassie could sneak out for lunch.
I was there earlier than I expected and was gladly surprised to be first in line. So excited, I insta-ed, tweeted and Facebook-ed it!

Bun. No I haven’t lost it. I’m just stating the translation of this creatively named joint serving Taiwanese buns. I’ve found myself peering longingly into the original Soho branch but never been in on account of the monstrous queue. So imagine my surprise at simply walking into their other branch up near Totterham Court road. We managed to get a seat relatively quickly on a Friday at 6:30pm. Maybe we were just lucky or people knew something we didn’t. Wouldn’t be the first time I had been hoodwinked about food.

The Frying Pan Diaries :: The Frying Pan Diaries Bao Fitzrovia

In this current climate, if you have yet to eat a bao, you are SERIOUSLY missing out.

Little fluffy white pockets stuffed with the most outrageously tasty fillings. The kind of food that makes you close you eyes and murmur &mmmmmmm& to nobody in particular but just in a deep appreciation of what is happening on your tastebuds.

I mean, if you don&t look like this guy ⬇ below when eating bao, you&re doing something wrong. It&s a pretty accurate representation.

Bao started life as a food truck making the rounds on London&s ever growing street food scene. It then set down slightly more permanent...

London has the quality and diversity of food like no other. Well, maybe New York too. Next up on the list of niche restaurants is steamed buns from Bao.

BAO = Bun. This is how they describe themselves
"We make all our Baos in house, using milk, wheat flour and a roux. We steam our Baos so they are soft, pillowy and cloud-like."

That&s it. what more do you want to know?

Bao is very related to one of my other loves; Burgers. If you think about it, they are very similar. Buns are a vessel to serve food.

When the buns are &soft, pillowy and cloud like& it is no surprise...
