Since the original Hoppers opened in 2015, the restaurant has gone from strength to strength. It now has three branches in prime London locations, not to mention a catering service, home delivery, meal kits and a shop. The Marylebone branch on Wigmore Street is a pared-back, tropical space based on the work of the late Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa. There is a reception bar area perfectly suited to cocktail receptions, four semi-private vaults for up to eight guests each, and the restaurant can also be hired semi-exclusively or in its entirety for larger events.
You and your guests can start things off with a colourful cocktail like an arrack attack, made with Sri Lankan arrack, house ginger beer and coriander seeds, or an old fort composed of rye whiskey, cognac, banana, black walnut and vanilla. Those seeking something hoppier can opt for the likes of a tropical lager made by Camden Town Brewery in collaboration with Hoppers. The wine list is to the point, with a diverse range of old and new world bottles, all available by the glass.
The food at Hoppers needs little introduction: punchy Sri Lankan dishes, priced reasonably and presented with flair. Snack on some banana chips, curry leaf peanuts or lanka mixture, before moving to small plates like hot butter squid, devilled paneer or mutton rolls. The eponymous hoppers aren’t to be missed, with a fried egg at the centre and a choice of chutneys alongside. There is plenty of choice when it comes to karis (the Tamil word for curries), including fish, crab, chicken, pork and lamb shank, as well as veggie options like aubergine or squash and spinach.
