Panel Talk with Leyla Kazim, Mike Keen & Gunter Kuhnle: Preservatives

28 Oct 2026

Our expert panel will separate evidence from opinion and examine what the future of food transparency should look like.

Are preservatives harmful? What is meant by "ultra-processed"? Which ingredients deserve scrutiny, and which are unfairly demonised? From safety standards and labelling regulations to human health and consumer trust, this thought-provoking panel will separate evidence from opinion and explore what the future of food transparency should look like. Bringing together experts from across food policy, journalism and nutrition, the discussion will examine how modern food is made, why additives are used, and what consumers really need to know when navigating increasingly complex choices.

Chairing the conversation is award-winning food broadcaster and writer Leyla Kazim, familiar to audiences from BBC Radio 4's The Food Programme and BBC One's MasterChef.

Joining her on the panel are:

  • Mike Keen, chef, adventurer and ancestral diet advocate, whose travels have taken him from Inuit communities in Greenland to indigenous food cultures across the world in pursuit of understanding how humans have eaten throughout history.
  • Gunter Kuhnle, Professor of Nutrition and Food Science at the University of Reading, whose research focuses on how to measure diet more accurately and how plant compounds such as flavanols are metabolised. He has also been a member of scientific advisory panels evaluating food additives for the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA).

One more panellist to be announced.

Ticket includes:

  • Welcome drink
  • 3 canapes
  • A night of scintillating conversation
