Learn as you drink with the WSET’s new immersive spirits classes

Marks bar at Hixter Bankside London

If you thought learning about wine and spirits meant sitting in a classroom, think again. This year, classes by the Wine & Spirits Education Trust, each focusing on a different spirit, can be streamed direct to some of London’s top bars.

The first series of events will be held in June, in Mark’s Bar at Hixter Bankside, and the spirit of choice will be rum. Then, in August, it’s all change, with masterclasses in gin taking place in the Punch Room at The London Edition hotel. The final leg of the tour, in November, will be in Showdown at The Lockhart, and whisky will be the focus of attention.

When you arrive at the bars, you’ll be given a pair of headphones and a flight of the spirit in question, then guided through the tasting experience. After the class, the bartender will mix your favourite spirit of the three you tasted into a cocktail. Now that’s what we call inspired teaching. Anyone thirsty for more knowledge when they get home can download a follow-up podcast that describes their chosen spirit in more detail - and puts them in with a chance of winning a WSET Spirits course.

Classes cost from £15. Contact the individual bars for more details, or visit WSET.
