Californian Wine at Hawksmoor

Hawksmoor may serve some of the finest steak in the capital but the Shoreditch restaurant doesn’t just rely on a beefed up menu to pull in the crowds. It also ploughs a lot of thought into its wines and, for June, has teamed up with Wines of California and top US wine supplier The Wine Treasury to offer diners some delightful tipples from the sunshine state.

Rare bottles from boutique wineries and Napa Valley favourites have been added to Hawksmoor’s already extensive wine list – the fruity Californian reds with their ripe tannins stand up well to the char-grilled steaks which are cooked over fiercely hot charcoal to reveal a rich, meaty centre and bittersweet caramelised crust. And, in terms of cost, the wines boast some of the fairest prices you’ll find in London restaurants.

Huw Gott, co-owner of Hawksmoor recommends ‘the light, fruity and juicy Caymus Clark & Telephone Pinot Noir 2006 (£50 a bottle) which goes exceptionally well with the subtle flavours of fillet steak, and the dark cherry and black pepper flavours of Cline Syrah 2006 (£28 a bottle, £7 for a 175ml glass) which complements the well-marbled rib-eye.’

Other all-rounder options with big reputations include Bonny Doon’s Rhone blend Le Cigare Volante 2003 (£47.50 a bottle), Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars’ top Cabernet Cask 23 2005 (£160), and rare gems such as Bacio Divino 2004 (£80).
