The Rose & Crown in Clapham, which has recently undergone a major refurb, looks brilliant. It has two distinct spaces for private hire; a ground-floor pub with a marbled fireplace and a smart first-floor dining room. The brick and terracotta coloured tiled exterior has remained, as has the soul of a classic pub, but the interior feels modern and chic - filled with wood and complemented by colour pops of orange and walnut.
The whole space has been given a major face lift, right down to the new stemmed beer glasses. A new outside terrace area, which overlooks Clapham piazza, has added a fresh feel to the outside, a great space to enjoy a drink on a warm day. This would be a brilliant place to host an event or party, purely down to versatility alone - whether you’re looking to host a sophisticated event or a casual get together,The Rose & Crown has a space for you.
Both the a la carte (first floor) and the ‘nibbles’ menu (ground floor) focus on seasonal British fare and, much like the decor, retain options reminiscent of the classic pub with dishes such as battered fish and chips and a burger with triple-cooked chips. More modern fare is also available: salted cod beignets sit alongside asparagus with cured egg yolks and parmesan custard. The pub’s dessert list is indulgent, think sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch and dulce de leche ice cream as well as the signature cardamom and date sticky toffee pudding.
The drinks list has been carefully curated and selected by sommeliers, home to some great picks for very reasonable prices. Of course, should that not take your fancy, there is a good list of draught beers as well as spirits and soft drinks. The Rose and Crown feels very much like a new-wave pub, not in a way that will leave you longing for the good old days but more in the way that makes you ever grateful for a pub that serves great drinks and great food, the perfect venue in which to host.
