Durdar Road, Carlisle, Cumbria , Cumbria, CA2 4TS

The most northerly of the Jockey Club’s venues, Carlisle Racecourse in Cumbria might have a racing heritage that dates back to the 16th century, but it is still making history today – the course held the world’s first exclusively female jockey race in 2011. A steady upgrading of its facilities ensures that conferences are just as well catered for as parties. Event spaces are spread across the three floors of the grandstand and a trackside facility that overlooks the parade ring. These include a host of boxes, which work for hospitality or boardroom meetings, and hold up to 40 in theatre-style seating. Gretna Green being just over the border, the venue is suitably equipped for wedding parties, with a range of spaces available. The 220-capacity Patterson Suite would be an obvious choice, with its own bar and views over the racecourse – a great setting for group photos. There’s free parking for up to 400 cars on site too.

The venue invested £2.7m in its latest stand a few years ago, extending its event facilities in the process. Medium-sized conferences work well in the Cromwell Suite, which can accommodate up to 100 delegates theatre style. The space is also popular as a banqueting hall for as many people. Wedding receptions work well in the Peterborough Chase Suite, which will also accommodate 100 guests seated and has panoramic views across the course. It also has its own reception area and bar. If the weather’s good, events can be taken outside – there’s plenty of space for barbecues. The Home of Racing in Suffolk has a rich equine heritage – it is the town where horseracing was born 350-odd years ago – and maintains that prestige today, as the HQ of British horseracing. Its racecourses host some of the calendar’s most important dates, such as the QIPCO Guineas Festival. The venue has moved with the times, though, offering conference facilities and hospitality to match the best of the Jockey Club portfolio, to which it belongs. If conferencing is a priority then the Millennium Suite in the like-named Grandstand is worth a look, accommodating up to 300 delegates. July is when the course really comes to life with a string of concert dates to go with the mainstay racing.
