About

‘All change at Denmark Hill!’ as the Fat Controller might say. The Phoenix, set in the converted Italianate 1860s booking hall at Denmark Hill station, rose from the ashes of a fire in 1980, but has just been given another lease of life by a splendid refurb from owners Mitchells & Butlers. The pub’s soaring cathedral-like interior – all washed brick, warm woods and spruce blue paint job – has been sympathetically enhanced. British craft beers are on rotation: Hogsback Hogstar, Roosters Baby Faced Assassin and Oakham Citra, perhaps. Order reasonably priced Old and New World wines with snacks such as pea, feta and mint arancini, or go big on a main menu of comfort food: chicken and ham hock pie, for instance, followed by salted caramel profiteroles. Popular with commuters, locals and junior doctors, The Phoenix also has a lively Wednesday quiz night where a burger plus drink costs just £7.
