The textile industry gave Halifax some magnificent architecture, and the renovated Georgian splendour of Somerset House is perhaps the grandest example. Leopard print banquettes, black and orange tiles and faux-deco posters set the tone in Le Metropolitan’s café and brasserie, which stakes its claim with a menu of international favourites from wild mushrooms on toast and chicken Caesar salad to beer-battered fish and chips, crab linguine or Thai chicken with soy noodles. To finish, explore the decent cheese selection or try something sweet – perhaps lemon posset or chocolate and orange ‘swirl’. The bar dispenses a regulation mix of wines, beer and cocktails, and the Grand Salon upstairs is perfect for big bashes with its stunning rococo plasterwork and elegantly laid tables. There’s also an attractive courtyard for eating and drinking alfresco.
