The Divinity School at the Bodleian Libraries is one of the most atmospheric wedding venues in the country, offering couples the chance to marry amid the splendour of Oxford’s “dreaming spires.” Set in the heart of the city, surrounded by the Radcliffe Camera, the Sheldonian Theatre and the Bridge of Sighs, it is a location that feels both cinematic and steeped in centuries of history. For couples wanting a celebration that blends romance with grandeur, there is nowhere quite like it.
The Bodleian Libraries offer exclusive hire of their most iconic spaces, allowing you to shape the entire day within one remarkable setting. Ceremonies take place in Convocation House, a 17th-century chamber with a breathtaking fan-vaulted ceiling and carved wooden benches that wrap around the room. This is where the University’s supreme legislative body once met, and today it offers an intimate, majestic setting for vows witnessed by up to 100 guests. Adjoining Chancellor’s Court serves as a private entrance hall and serene gathering point before the ceremony, adding a lovely sense of occasion.
Following the ceremony, guests can transition to the Proscholium or step into the Old Schools Quadrangle (available exclusively on Saturdays and selected Sundays) for a drinks reception surrounded by ancient stone archways and warm late-afternoon light. The quadrangle also makes a picturesque location for photographs, alongside favourites like the Wren Door and the historic college gardens nearby.
As evening unfolds, the celebration moves into the Divinity School, one of the University’s oldest and most extraordinary spaces. Dating from the 1400s, its soaring Gothic vaults and sculpted ceiling create an enchanting atmosphere for dinner and dancing. Up to 120 guests can be seated beneath the intricately carved stonework, and when the early evening sun streams through the arched windows, the room feels truly magical. Dinner, speeches, cake cutting and dancing follow naturally in this remarkable hall, with celebrations typically continuing until midnight.
