About

The Divinity School at the Bodleian Libraries offers one of the most extraordinary private dining settings in the UK, a breathtaking fusion of academic heritage, Gothic architecture and Oxford’s unmistakable sense of ceremony. For hosts looking to create an unforgettable evening, it is a venue that turns a dinner into an occasion, placing guests inside one of the University’s most historic and architecturally significant rooms.

Dating from the 1400s, the Divinity School is the oldest teaching and examination room at the University of Oxford. Its soaring fan-vaulted ceiling, intricate stonework and long, aisle-like layout make it a spectacular backdrop for seated dinners of up to 120 guests. There are few dining spaces quite like it: every detail communicates history, craftsmanship and centuries of scholarship, while the atmosphere, grand, atmospheric, glowing with candlelight or soft uplighting, lends itself to everything from black-tie celebrations to cultural dinners and high-profile corporate hosting.

Hiring the Divinity School also includes access to the adjacent Convocation House and Chancellor’s Court, both of which enrich the dining experience. Convocation House, built in the 1600s for the University’s legislative body, brings dark wood paneling, natural acoustics and fixed seating that feels steeped in Oxford tradition. Chancellor’s Court, once the University’s courtroom, now serves as an elegant private entrance or a dedicated catering space for the evening. The flow between these rooms allows for drinks receptions, pre-dinner gatherings and seamless service throughout the night.

Private dining at the Divinity School is supported by the Bodleian’s experienced Events team, who advise on approved caterers and trusted suppliers, ensuring the evening runs with precision. Whether the occasion calls for a formal multi-course menu, a cultural banquet or a bespoke dining experience shaped around a theme, the team help curate a night worthy of the surroundings.

Beyond the Old Bodleian, additional spaces in the Weston Library - including Blackwell Hall for large dinners and the rooftop terrace for striking pre-dinner receptions - offer flexibility for hosts seeking a multi-space event or an elevated finale.
