SquareMeal Review of Plum Valley

The minimal, grey on black, slate & leather stylings of this slinky Chinatown interloper look expensive, but the menu remains affordable. It roams around China, Malaysia & Singapore, offering northern claypot chicken with Shaoxing wine, ho fun noodles with prawns, Fujian fried rice, & luxurious Hakkasan-style fusion dishes such as grilled foie-gras dumplings or black cod with honey & Champagne. There’s plenty of room over three levels, including family-friendly tables on the first floor, & a karaoke room for civilised hen parties & corporate sessions. Plum Valley ‘stands out’ with its broadly Asian cooking & plenty of expats understand what the kitchen is up to – even if the local fashion is towards authentic regional Chinese cuisine. Wines kick off at £13, & cocktails such as the lychee-based blossom bellini cost £9.50.

A good restaurant in Chinatown

We had a very enjoyable evening at the restaurant. There was a queue out the door when we arrived so I was very glad we made a reservation. Service was friendly and helpful, food was good and not too expensive. Our table was very comfortable and the room wasn't over crowded like many popular restaurants.

Fantastic location and atmosphere. Best dimsum in London. We so much enjoyed other dishes as well.

Big Improvement

A business colleague and I ate in Plum Valley on Tuesday evening and had a very tasty meal.   I had the crispy chilli beef and my colleague had prawns, both served with nice bowls of rice on nice plates.

I have been going there for years and this was definitely the best service and taste ever. Service was enhanced by young lady called " Reiko" who had a wicked sense of humour.   I will be back soon.

Decently classy place in London's China Town
Quite a strange place this – its all slate and mood lights and stuff, but the branded chopsticks are put on paper napkins. Its the little inconsistencies in this place which prevent it from being a solid 4*, as does the weird layout of the whole thing. Apart from that, the food was perfectly passable but could have been better. Stupid example – the chili-pepper squid was not cleaned properly and could have done with a lot more chili. Decent value though, and pretty fast.

Very superior and original dim sum offerings presented much more elegantly than most Chinese places in Soho. Prices higher than average for a Chinatown restaurant. Mainly Western clientele – so you don't get the feeling you are eating in a 100% authentic place – maybe Chinese people don't go because it's a bit “smarter” and less traditional than average. The whole place is a bit dimly lit and sepulchral, bench seats are too low and service can be extremely slow. Strongly recommended for unusual dim sum choice and good wine list, sensibly priced.

This Chinatown restaurant stands out amoung the other traditional Chinese eaterys you expect to find along the strip yet fits so well with the night life of a busy London. The Interior of dark chic design and the lightening perfect for most occasions at this venue. We were greeted by a very welcoming Hostess who while taking us to our seats on the third gave us a little tour of the place. The menu is as you would expect but was superbly prepared and well presented.Kung Pow Chicken and the addition of Pineapple with the sweet and sour worked a treat. We mistook the noodles with chicken in blackbean sauce as a main dish as the portions of meat were so generous.Wine too was what you expected but the Chilean Merlot was very pleasing to drink at a budget unlike some house reds you can find in other places. The service was perfect and even enjoyed some friendly banter with the staff and other Plum goers. Would strongly recommend this place for couples or a small gathering to make use of the corner seating, comfortable sofas with the revolving server tray.
