Webbe's Rock-a-Nore is a fish restaurant set in the heart of Hastings' Old Town, opposite the net huts and fishing boats of The Stade, the town's historic and picturesque fishing quarter. Its location gives it one of the shortest ingredient journeys in Britain: fish and seafood are landed on the shingle beach just a minute's walk from the kitchen, caught daily by the small boats of the Hastings and Rye fleets.
The menu is built directly around that catch. A tasting menu of small dishes to share is a good place to start, alongside seafood platters and locally smoked fish. Signature dishes include potted crab, grilled Dover sole with samphire and winkle sauce, and steamed flounder with mussel and cider sauce, sitting alongside more classic choices such as cod in beer batter with hand-cut chips and gratinated native lobster. Prime cut steaks are available for non-fish eaters, and there's a separate children's menu for younger diners.
The restaurant is fully accessible, with just a shallow door plinth and all floors on one level, making it straightforward for wheelchair users to navigate. There's an outside dining terrace for good weather, though outside tables are allocated on a queue basis only and can't be reserved or requested in advance. Well-behaved small dogs are welcome at outside tables on a lead, though not permitted inside or on the seating itself; guide and assistance dogs are welcome throughout the restaurant.
Reservations can be made through the online booking system for tables of up to six guests, with larger parties asked to call the restaurant directly. A takeaway service is also available direct from the restaurant door, business permitting.
