SquareMeal Review of Vivat Bacchus Farringdon

Bronze Award

“Consistently good” is one regular’s verdict on this huge venue devoted to South African-accented wine and food (in that order). After more than a decade in business, Vivat Bacchus has entered a new phase, with the basement dining room now converted into a private space and more emphasis on the posh old-school wine bar. This animated arena tells two stories: the ‘walk-in' cheese room and vast Champagne fridge speak of flush epicurean punters, while blackboard promotions suggest workaday business dates. Open sandwiches and kangaroo burgers are always popular, but readers have also praised the healthy ‘five a day’ salads and “fantastic” BBQ short-rib with Coca Cola glaze, blossom honey, star anise, stem ginger and Asian slaw; after that, perhaps try mango pannacotta with vanilla and passion fruit. Bacchus himself would no doubt be impressed by VB's cellars holding over 18,000 bottles.

Really delicious food- had a smoked duck and chicory salad with awesome blue cheese. they aren't the most flexible staff but friendly enough. Good for a lunchtime meeting as although quiet, you aren't easily overheard from other tables.

Catch-up after work

Just popped in for a drink, the venue was very busy, though probably to do with it was the last Friday of January. We just had a few drinks and the pitta and hummus is the best - would recommend whilst having a drink or two. Also they do very good cheeseboards - a little pricey though, but you get to have a sneak in the cheese room before choosing. Good selection of South African wines. they do have music in the evenings. Else overall good and a good place to go for a drink and catch-up in the city.

Returned to Vivat Bacchus having been away for a weekend and didn't want to cook! As ever, Vivat is consistently good for food and service with great wine. Having been away we opted for the healthy 5 a day salad and asparagus and spinach soup. Both were excellent. This was followed by a sirloin and the chicken with Greek salad. Again, both were great. We'll be back...

Time has not been kind

The danger with revisiting a restaurant many years after first visiting, is that you cannot help but make numerous comparisons with the original. A decade or so ago, Vivat Bacchus was one of my "go to" restaurants and back then, it was so different to anything else, that I fully expected this to still be the case. Alas no; the downstairs restaurant is no more, the wine rooms have disappeared, the eclectic menu replaced by something more suitable for the masses, even the cheese room is a mere shadow of its former self........what is left is a fairly decent upmarket wine bar/restaurant and perhaps if I lived/worked in the area, it would be a regular haunt, particularly for the wine-themed evenings, but I cannot say it is worth travelling to. I will just have to live on the memories of times gone by........

I have fond memories of this place from dining there regularly a few years back. Great vibe, brilliant food and wine, and that cheese legendary cheese room. Clearly its under new ownership. A basic ‘pub’ menu, slow inattentive service, terrible and overpriced wine list. To top all this – the kitchen and front of house staff were openly bickering, not ideal in an open plan kitchen. One of the most poorly run restaurants I've been to in recent times.
