St Albans, a leafy cathedral city just 20 miles north west of London, has a lot going for it. Named after Britain’s first Saint, Alban, the city is not just the birthplace of the hot cross bun, it’s also home to Britain’s oldest pub. Foodies and fashionistas can rejoice, because St Alban’s has absolutely everything they could possibly want. The town is known for its number of independent shops, boutiques and artisan jewellers, selling everything from interiors to health products.

It’s also home to the famous Charter Market, which happens twice a week on a Wednesday and a Saturday. Whether you’re looking to get your watch fixed or your hands on some delicious gin, as long as you're prepared to haggle you won’t go home disappointed, or empty handed. St Albans is worth a visit just to walk around and admire all the medieval builders which scatter the town, and of course you can’t miss the city’s cathedral, which is often referred to as the Abbey.

After a day spent wandering around St Albans, you’ll definitely have worked up an appetite which is why we’ve put a selection of the city’s restaurants together for you.
