Whether you're a local looking for a new go-to pub with a twist, or one of the many day-trippers who make their way to Deal every year to enjoy its nostalgic beach front and vintage stores, The Port Arms is a considered pub and restaurant serving up authentic Jamaican food, alongside live music, a well-stocked bar and - of course - good times!
If you need one reason alone to visit The Port Arms, it's the location. Situated directly on the beach front this is no doubt a prime spot and one that any establishment in Deal would be lucky to have. Come summer, the beaches are packed and for those looking for somewhere to sit outside, soak up the sun and enjoy a refreshing beverage inbetween sea dips, this is the place.
In terms of vibe, The Port Arms is relaxed and homely. Inside, there are classic markers of a traditional pub with wooden wall pannelling and cosy seating, while the beer garden outside is large with plenty of seating. Anything goes here, and everyone is welcome.
Another huge selling point here is its kitchen collaboration with Dexter, founder and chef behind Soul Chef Kitchen. Established in 2020, Dexter draws on his Jamaican heritage alongside contemporary cooking techniques to develop a hearty menu that really makes The Port Arms stand out. To start, try some of the 'likkle vibes' like chicken wings tossed in secret sauce with options for spicy or sweet, or fried prawns with sweet chilli sauce.
Main dishes look like the Tun Up Fowl which sees authentic jerk chicken smoked low and slow on a jerk pan, as well as the Sticky Licky which is boneless fried chicken tossed in a sticky BBQ glaze and covered in coconut crumbs. There's also a nod to Deal's coastal location with the Sea Vibe which takes the catch of the day and tops it with tangy escovitch. That's not where the menu stops, though. There's also plenty of sides, sharing plates and even indulgent desserts to get excited about.
