The Plough Shiplake offers everything you want in a countryside pub, but with a few clever surprises. Set in a characterful period building just outside Henley-on-Thames, it blends rural charm with contemporary flair. If we were chatting to friends, we'd say 'historic bones and bold design choices', like deep blue walls and curated artwork in the dining room. It’s relaxed yet refined, making it just as suitable for long-overdue catch-ups over drinks as it is for special family celebrations or birthday dinners with a bit more polish.
The atmosphere is inviting and unfussy, but there’s clear attention to detail in every corner, from the warm service to the striking interiors. Whether you’re in the mood for a spontaneous Friday night supper or a planned group gathering, The Plough delivers on comfort, flavour, and a touch of flair.
The menu is compact, seasonal, and filled with thoughtful combinations. While you peruse, kick things off with crispy whitebait and lemon mayonnaise or the delightfully indulgent Dirty Anna, a board of Dorset venison chorizo with whipped Black Bomber cheese espuma. Starters include an autumnal curried parsnip soup with compressed apple and artichoke crisp, as well as rich braised beef cheek matched with wild mushroom and parmesan.
Mains are confidently executed and flavour-forward. The confit duck leg arrives with pomme puree, red cabbage, fig, and a silky jus; venison loin with salt-baked celeriac, malt crumb, and bone marrow sauce; and The Plough beef burger, which comes pepped up with Ogleshield cheese, pastrami, and pickled mayo. Sides, meanwhile, might include buttered mash, chantenay carrots, chips or skinny fries.
As for desserts, we're keen on the sticky toffee pudding with miso caramel, as well as the citrus baked Alaska, which comes with a blondie and citrus compote. The Plough Shiplake menu also offers a kids' menu and is renowned for serving a brilliant Sunday roast.
