Formerly The Edward Lear, this rambling landmark boozer has been refitted by owners Laine’s – whose venues also include Aeronaut. They’ve certainly gone to town, deluging the restrained Edwardian interior with a chaotic cascade of decorative curiosities, kiddies fairground fripperies included. Behind the bar, the array of wildly named domestic and imported craft brews is equally outlandish, from Atom’s Schrodinger’s Cat (Humberside) to Yeastie Boys’ Pot Kettle Black (New Zealand). All the 20-strong list of accessibly priced wines is available by the glass, and upstairs you’ll discover cocktail bar Aviary. To fill a gap, snack on tempura prawns, chicken wings or tofu satay. More substantial are burgers, burritos, and inexpensive daily specials that might include shepherd’s pie with kale or mushroom, blue cheese and hazelnut gnocchi, followed by apple and blueberry cheesecake. At weekends, DJs play late for north London night owls.
