This ancient Cotswold inn is steeped in history and has evolved over the centuries, from hostelry to coaching inn to luxury hotel. The patina of the past lies thick upon the walls, but don’t be fooled into thinking that it’s behind the times: the smart Barrington’s restaurant, complete with an open fire and flagstone flooring, serves a thoroughly modern menu including beef steak burgers, as well as oak-smoked salmon, tempura tiger prawns and a daily changing pie special. The restaurant also serves brunch every day and afternoon tea can be enjoyed in the courtyard, but if you’re after something a little less down-to-earth, go for dinner beneath the vaulted ceilings of the Great Hall. Here, you’ll choose from the likes of twice-baked cheese soufflé and soused Cornish Herrings, as well as Cotswold lamb and local pigeon.
