SquareMeal Review of The Fox at Oddington

Silver Award

Deep in the bucolic, leafy heart of the Cotswolds, The Fox at Oddington is the eptiome of quietly luxurious country perfection – a place where rustic charm meets refined comfort. It’s the kind of pub that seems to have grown effortlessly out of its surroundings, yet bears all the unmistakable hallmarks of Carol Bamford’s thoughtful vision. Inside, elegant wooden floors gleam softly beneath the glow of pendant lighting, while Crittall-style French windows flood the space with gentle natural light. Every detail feels considered but never contrived, from the artfully arranged wildflowers on the tables to the quiet efficiency of the discreet, ever-attentive staff.

A starter of prawn and crayfish cocktail, served with Daylesford Organic seven-seed sourdough, sets a confident tone - light, fresh, and perfectly balanced. Alternatively, the coarse Wootton Organic game pâté, robust and earthy, speaks of the Cotswolds’ autumnal bounty.

Mains continue in equally assured fashion. Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding arrive exactly as ordered, the meat blushing and tender, the Yorkshire pudding towering and crisp. The roast belly of Berkshire pork, meanwhile, is a masterclass in contrasts: shatteringly crisp crackling giving way to melting layers of sweet, savoury richness – the kind of dish that hushes conversation at the table.

Vegetarians are far from an afterthought here. The wild mushroom and fennel ragù with trofie pasta and their own cavolo nero offers a deeply satisfying depth of flavour, lifted by the nutty, salty perfume of Grana Padano. For pudding, a vanilla pod–infused cheesecake delivers silken indulgence, though it faces stiff competition from The Fox’s own soft-serve vanilla ice cream – draped with cherry sauce and topped, for a note of nostalgia, with a Cadbury Flake.

The Fox at Oddington is both polished and genuine – a modern country inn that celebrates its roots while serving food of quietly confident excellence. Not surprising that the atmosphere hums with convivial warmth – a mix of well-heeled locals as well as super-contented weekenders and daytrippers who clearly feel they’ve found something special.

About

The Fox at Oddington is a modern British gastropub where rustic charm meets refined country dining. Part of the Daylesford family, it champions seasonal ingredients from its sister farms and trusted local suppliers, creating an inviting destination for birthdays, group gatherings, relaxed lunches and special occasions.

Set in the heart of Moreton in Marsh, the pub features bright, welcoming interiors with floor-to-ceiling windows that fill the space with natural light. Expect wood floors, exposed brick and neutral tones, anchored by a striking indoor tree that brings the outdoors in. A crackling fire and a well-stocked bar serving local beers and classic cocktails complete the warm village pub atmosphere. Beautifully styled bedrooms are also available for guests wishing to stay overnight.

Head chef Alan Gleeson leads the kitchen, crafting a modern British menu shaped by excellent produce. Nibbles include pork crackling with applesauce and fennel salt or truffle salami with cornichons. Starters range from Wootton organic chicken liver parfait with toasted brioche and fig and pork chutney to spiced market garden squash soup or steak tartare.

Mains include organic venison bourguignon with smoked bacon and mashed potato, wild mushroom and fennel ragu, chalk stream trout, corn fed duck leg or a classic cheeseburger. Wood-fired pizzas like Margherita and diavola offer a more casual option, while sides such as tater tots with black garlic truffle and parmesan or Brussels sprouts with chestnuts add comfort. Desserts span sticky toffee pudding to the Foxy frangipane mince pie with creme fraiche.

Sunday lunch brings crisp roast belly of pork, sirloin steak or a butternut squash chestnut mushroom and sage nut roast served with Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes and braised red cabbage.

A dedicated snacks and pizza menu and a children’s menu make The Fox at Oddington a welcoming choice for every occasion.
