Just the sort of restaurant that every bustling town needs, this second manifestation of The Corner House (the first is in Minster) makes good use of the best produce that local farms have to offer. The result is a modern British menu providing simple decent food that’s already finding favour with diners. Bread and pasta are homemade: the former might be served with starters of the house terrine and chutney, or Kentish confit salmon, beetroot and horseradish. A meal could continue with decent steaks and triple-cooked chips, or a sharing plate of new-season Romney Marsh lamb shoulder, or Stour Valley rabbit stuffed with apricots. The drinks list also has a local flavour, highlighting Kentish wineries such as Chapel Down and Biddenden (though the selection does cross the Channel and then journey around the world). If you overdo it, repair to one of the simple but comfortable bedrooms upstairs.
