Rich in history and character, The Cock in Hitchin is a Grade II listed building that has been part of the town for nearly 500 years. The building has been everything from a cockfighting pit to a coaching house to an inn, but it now stands as a carefully restored gastropub with a vibrant seasonal menu of elevated British classics.
Step inside and the tone is warm, welcoming and atmospheric. Dark walls, deep brown leather seating and solid wood floors create a rich, cocooned feel, while industrial style lighting and artwork add a contemporary edge. The dining room leans slightly more polished, while the pub area offers a more relaxed alternative, with a large open bar and cosy seating that makes it just as suited to a quick drink as a full meal.
Outside, the sense of space continues. A walled garden provides a quieter setting, with trees, a pergola and corner sofas creating a relaxed spot for drinks, while a separate courtyard with tables and chairs works well for casual outdoor dining in warmer months.
The menu reflects a modern British approach, built around seasonal ingredients sourced from trusted local suppliers. Snacks such as olives or spiced pork quavers set the tone, followed by starters including cured seafood with pickled fennel or a pork scotch egg. Mains range from dry aged Herefordshire beef with caramelised shallot and Guinness to North Sea cod with tenderstem broccoli and dill sauce, alongside vegetarian dishes such as king oyster mushroom with pressed potato and hazelnut. The savoury menu is rounded out with sides including ripple cooked chips and caramelised savoy cabbage.
Desserts continue the seasonal theme, from rhubarb and custard choux bun to baked Cox apple, while the drinks list spans wines, local ales, craft beers and house cocktails, alongside low and non-alcoholic options.
