About

The Black Horse in Amberley, West Sussex, is a beloved local pub, now owned and run by The Gladwin Brothers - well known for their Local & Wild group of London restaurants. The project marks several firsts for the brothers - not only is it their first opening outside London, it's also their debut pub with rooms, and brings them home to the local pub in their home village of Amberley.

Richard and Oliver Gladwin have built a reputation on seasonal British cooking, drawing on foraging, farming and strong relationships with local producers. Their London restaurants - including The Shed, Rabbit, Sussex British Bistro, The Black Lamb, and the Chelsea pub The Pig’s Ear - reflect this ethos. The Black Horse extends that philosophy, supported by the brothers’ connection to their family farm and vineyard in Sussex, run by their brother Gregory.

Menus at The Black Horse follow the Local & Wild principle of 'what grows together, goes together,' with produce sourced almost exclusively from Sussex and neighbouring counties. Guests can expect handmade pies at the bar, signature rotisserie chicken, accessible lunch menus, and weekly roasts. Drinks feature wines from the family’s Nutbourne Vineyard, alongside bottles from producers such as Nyetimber, plus beers from Langham Brewery and Adnams, and local Sussex spirits.

Ingredients from the Gladwin family farm - including Wild Brooks beef, vineyard lamb, free-range pork and freshly laid eggs - form the backbone of the kitchen. Bread is baked in-house with Shipton Mill flour, vegetables and game come via Chefs’ Farm, and foraged ingredients play a role across the menu.

The pub retains the feel of a traditional country inn, with a locals’ bar, dining room overlooking the kitchen, private dining areas and a garden for summer service. A more informal space with an open kitchen offers coffee, baked goods and daily bread. Throughout, artwork by the brothers’ mother appears, adding a personal touch. Upstairs, the 11 bedrooms offer understated comfort, with deep mattresses, crisp linens and Amberley Pottery details.
