About

The Black Cow brings a bold, theatrical take on the Middle Eastern steakhouse to Shoreditch, occupying a space within The Stage, once home to Shakespeare’s Curtain Theatre. The restaurant is the latest venture from Shiri Kraus and Amir Batito, who have created a dining experience that is as much about performance and atmosphere as it is about confident, fire-led cooking. It is a space designed to surprise and entertain, but also to deliver on substance.

The layout unfolds across three distinct zones. The Performance Courtyard offers a lively, open setting ideal for groups and casual dining. The Gallery is more refined, with a focus on detail and pacing, while The Backstage, a private dining room tucked away from the main space, allows for a more intimate experience. Design throughout blends theatrical flair with warm textures and rich colour. Terracotta flooring, deep green upholstery, vintage lighting and glass-fronted fridges stocked with dry-aged steaks set the tone. The open kitchen is a focal point, where chefs work over a Josper grill in full view of diners.

The menu reflects the same energy. Starters include cornbread served with lamb butter, lamb merguez corn dogs paired with labneh and sweet harissa, and fried artichokes finished with stilton. The beef offering is central to the experience, with cuts like picanha, onglet and T-bone dry-aged in house and brought tableside with flaming herbs and burnt herb oil. The theatre is not just visual; it is matched by deep, carefully layered flavours that honour both steakhouse tradition and the spices of the Levant.

Sides are no afterthought, with options like za'atar fries and burnt onion mash adding texture and interest. Desserts continue the theme, with dishes such as spiced quince with almond crumble and orange blossom ice cream, or a gorgonzola cheesecake served with fig coulis and seeded crackers. The drinks list brings together original cocktails and lesser-known wines, with the Ottoman Martini, made using Turkish coffee and cardamom, standing out as a house favourite.

The Black Cow is more than a restaurant. It is a fully formed concept that delivers from the first bite to the final pour, combining a strong sense of place with personality, bold flavours and a healthy dose of drama.
