TAI brings the soul of Southern Thailand to Brockley, nestled on Foxberry Road in a quiet but characterful corner of South East London. Unpretentious and carefully crafted, it delivers dishes rooted in street-food tradition, yet refined with the clarity and technique of a modern kitchen.
The dining room is compact and softly lit, with exposed brick walls, timber shelving and a smattering of greenery that lend a natural warmth to the space. Soft bamboo textures and wide windows let in daylight by lunch and take on a golden hue in the evening. There is a simplicity to the design that matches the menu’s directness, allowing the food to shine without distraction.
Southern Thai specialities form the heart of the menu. Starters such as crispy larb chicken patties with roasted rice and mint, or shiitake tempura with spiced sriracha mayo, strike a balance of bold heat and brightness. The Hat Yai chicken is a standout, marinated in turmeric and deep-fried to a perfect crunch, served with a tangy house sriracha. Larger plates include a deeply fragrant Massaman curry enriched with cashews and slow-cooked potato, a punchy Pad Ga Prao stir-fry with garlic and basil, and wok-charred Drunken Man noodles with chilli, Shaohsing wine and a choice of smoked duck, chicken, tofu or prawn. Dishes arrive vibrant, generously portioned and consistently well judged in terms of flavour.
The drinks list is small but curated with care. House-made iced teas, tamarind sodas and fruit juices rotate seasonally. There is no heavy cocktail programme or wine list, just modest accompaniments that suit the food’s warmth and punch.
TAI is an unassuming gem. A soulful, confident Thai kitchen that delivers flavour with integrity, and a sense of welcome that lingers long after the last bite.
