SquareMeal Review of Swift

Gold Award

The words ‘fancy a swift drink?’ have never been better chosen – though we’re sure you’ll want to linger over cocktails at this classy little bar. Not just another Soho watering hole, Swift has some serious pedigree. In a previous life it was the legendary LAB, a late-noughties hotspot that launched many of today’s big bar names and also gave the world the Pornstar Martini.

Today it’s run by Mia Johansson and Bobby Hiddleston (stars in their own right, thanks to stints at Milk & Honey, Callooh Callay and The Dead Rabbit in NYC), in partnership with Edmund Weil and Rosie Stimpson, owners of bird-themed Nightjar and Oriole.

Walk-ins favour the smart-but-casual ground floor space, where wines, beers and cider are offered alongside a short list of signature cocktails – try the house Sgroppino made with lemon sorbet and Prosecco or Tidal Wave (Chivas Regal 12, matcha and coconut water).

Those drinking with more serious intent should book a spot in the seductive lounge bar downstairs, with its 250-strong whisky list and live music at the weekends (mostly blues and jazz). Sophisticated sips include the spicy Santa Fe (Smokey Monkey Scotch, vermouth, tonka, chocolate bitters and chilli), while nibbles run to oysters, charcuterie and cheese.

About

Swift Soho is one of London’s most celebrated cocktail bars and for good reason. Nestled in the heart of Soho on Old Compton Street, it’s a stylish yet unfussy destination that’s equally suited to spontaneous meet-ups and meticulously planned date nights. Divided across two floors, it offers two very different drinking experiences under one elegant roof.

Upstairs is for the walk-ins, the after-work negroni crowd, the aperitif aficionados. It’s a light-filled, fast-paced space where drinks come quickly and expertly mixed, perfect for those who like their martinis cold and their people-watching warm. It’s also ideal for a pre-theatre sip or an impromptu post-dinner drink, with cocktails served swiftly, as the name suggests.

Downstairs, however, is a more intimate affair. Reservations-only, the mood here is lower-lit, the menu more adventurous, and the whisky list staggering - boasting over 300 bottles from around the world and a 68-page menu to prove it. Expect rich, complex cocktails and a quietly confident atmosphere, ideal for those who like their spirits aged and their conversations unhurried.

On Sundays, the space truly comes alive with live jazz sessions between 6pm and 9pm. It’s a highlight of the London bar scene, pairing exceptional music with expertly crafted drinks and a buzzy yet grown-up crowd. Bookings for the downstairs bar are available on the hour (from 5pm, or 3pm during winter), with each table reserved for two hours.

While Swift Soho doesn’t cater to large parties (six guests max), it’s an ideal spot for a stylish catch-up or a sophisticated night out. Dress smart - football kits and hen dos won’t fly here - and note the 21+ policy. This is a bar that knows exactly what it’s doing: world-class cocktails in a space that feels both relaxed and refined. For Mayfair-style polish without the pretense, Swift Soho hits the mark.
