Tucked away on Portsmouth’s south side is Southsea, a charming stretch of seafront that combines retro British waterfront atmosphere and quick access to the bustling city of Portsmouth, which itself is one of Britain’s most historic port towns, as well as one of the country’s busiest commercial ports. Numerous ferries rumble in and out of Portsmouth Harbour every day, and each one drifts past Southsea as it sails off into the English Channel.

Whether you’re exploring temporarily before you head off to Europe, or you’re here more permanently, it’s worth getting acquainted with some of the best local restaurants in Southsea. This little slice of the south coast has a proud cafe culture, with lots of long-standing family-run cafes lining the seafront. On top of that you have newer cafes with in-house roasteries, and a good helping of great restaurants as well, particularly those centred around traditional British food.

Southsea has a number of great pubs where you can get a pint of local beer and some good, hearty pub food into the bargain. And of course, this wouldn’t be the British seaside without a good chippy - Southsea has a number of good fish and chip shops to choose from too, many of which are right by the sea so you can wander down the coastline with a bag of chips.
