SquareMeal Review of Shimogamo

Named after the famous Shimogamo Shinto shrine in Kyoto, this cute little Japanese gives off a serene, contemplative vibe with its austere interiors and sweetly courteous service. The kitchen turns its hand to most mainstays of the traditional repertoire, from gleaming sushi platters to teriyaki skewers and hibachi-grilled specials. In between, build a meal from gyoza dumplings, vinegar-tinged salads, sukiyaki hotpots, clean, crispy tempura and bowls of udon noodles. Prices seem very fair, especially as a great deal of effort goes into the quality of the ingredients and the beautiful, arty presentation – note the sashimi arranged on bundles of twigs over ice. Shimogamo also scores with its impressive saké list, which runs from everyday tipples to high-end premium versions – although you can drink affordably by the flask.

My experience there tonight was so bad I decided to sign up for this website in order to write a review. It's a cold night and my bf and I wanted some hot food. We walked past this restaurant, which is quite new, and decided to give it a go (against our better judgment of going to our usual favourites on Parkway). We ordered 3 hot dishes and rice to share. We asked for everything to come together. The first dish, spicy monk fish, was nice and fresh. Nice presentation too. But everything went downhill from there. After slowly eating the fish for almost 10 minutes with no sign of other dishes, we asked for our rice. It came. We ate slowly, waiting for other dishes. Only after we finished the fish, did the second dish arrived – aubergine with miso sauce. Again it was nice. Nothing spectacular, just nice enough dish. By now our rice had gone from hot to luke warm, almost cold. We slowly ate our aubergine with rice, and nothing else. We asked the waiter about our final chicken dish, and was told it was being cooked and would arrive in a couple of minutes. This didn't happen. We finished the aubergine, the rice had gone cold, we were staring blanking at our table and had nothing to eat. Finally the chicken karrage arrived, about 40 minutes after the monk fish. It's piping hot, so it's clear it was just cooked. So I don't know what the kitchen was doing in the past 40 minutes. The restaurant was only half full when we placed our order so it's not like they could not tackle 3 little dishes at the same time. So we sat there and ate the fried chicken on its own, with a bit of the left-over, very cold rice. Not nice. Will definitely not return.
