Awful experience

Last Thursday which was 13th of August my friend and I booked a table at Sam's restaurant in Fowey whilst saiing to the town that afternoon. We were pleased to be able to get a reservation that evening, knowing that everywhere would be busy that evening and as I had been there a couple of years ago and had been very pleased with the experience.

We arrived at the restaurant at the designated time and were met by the person I took to be the owner or manager.

He briefly explained the menu and asked us to photograph the specials board hanging in the bar. I thought this a bit odd at the time.

He then asked us to climb some stairs and take a seat.

As soon as I walked in to this room I said to my friend " this is the holding pen" This was what we had called this place years before, on my previous visit with friends, which is exactly what it was onthat occasion, somewhere to wait while our table was prepared.

This room had no windows was drab with no interesting features or pictures it had bar complete with moving flashing lights along the front of it. The whole thing looked and felt like a place you might wait for a takeaway meal at a Chinese or Indian establishment. To top it all they were playing 60s pop music.

There were two tables, one large one occupied by a large family with children another with a high backed fawn velour bench.the tables were varnish over red stained wood.

We were given our menus and asked if we wanted a drink.

We declined thinking that we would wait until we were at our table downstairs where the atmosphere was what you would expect in a popular restaurant.

The next thing was the arrival of our food and that was when our suspicionthat, this was where we were expected to eat, was confirmed. We ordered a bottle of rose wine which was warm and had to be put back in the Ice bucket to make it acceptable to drink.

I had boullabase fo my main course which was salty and tomato flavour with very little other discernable flavour speak of. The squid was overcooked and the bread was cheap sliced English baguette that you might find in a value aisle in a supermarket. No butter and an extra charge for a few extra slices.

When the waitress, who was clearly bored and waiting for her shift to finish asked me if everything was to our liking I told her, basically what sumed up content of this review .

I also assured he that she was not to blame but it would be useful if my comments were passed on.

A beautiful evening in a beautiful mooring spoiled.

Sam's is consistently excellent. The peak time queues are only an indication to the quality and freshness of the food served. The music is loud enough to create a buzz but generic enough to appeal to all ages. I have been going here annually for many years and other than the staff getting older, the place remains one of my Cornish (in fact UK) favourites
