Chef Neufville created Rice and Things from very humble beginnings, after arriving in the UK in the freezing cold, with only $8 in his pocket. This Jamaican restaurant and bar has gone from strength to strength after its beginning as a catering business, and then a hole in the wall takeaway. Neufville and his team aim to bring authentic, tasty and heartwarming Jamaican food to all of Rice and Things' customers, and offer them an experience where an open, committed and authentic community can blossom.
Starters on the menu include chicken wontons, red herring with water crackers and ackee and saltfish in the middle. There are many salads to choose from, including a plain black river salad and special fish option. Seafood is the first section on the main menu, with hope garden butterfly shrimps, rosegrey coconut shrimps and greenbank lobster in sweet peppers. The yallas curried fish is a big hit, as is the island escovitch fish, and from the meat section, there's a dish of golden grove curry lamb chops, Boston barbeque lamb chops and belfield stew beef. If chicken is more your thing, try the mothers stuffed chicken breast or faith's pen jerk chicken. Veggie dishes include the sunny side steamed callaloo and tofu chop suey.
Make sure you save a little space for dessert and try the sliced Jamaican fruit cake with rum cream, an Annotto Bay ripe banana split or the fresh fruit salad. From 5pm each day you can try out one of the set menu options, and there are also seasonal menus for holidays like Christmas, private dining specials and a long wine list, so that you can have a refreshing glass with your meal.
