Opened way back in 1946, The Regency Café (located on, you guessed it Regency Street near Westminster) is an iconic spot that’s decorated with an art deco flair, vintage touches, and walls with their original tiling. A little more modern, the tables have been updated with sleek Formica tops, and across those tiled walls you’ll spot photos of Tottenham Hotspur football players. You may even recognise The Regency Café from film and television, having been the setting for many BBC series scenes – including Rescue Me, and Judge John Deed and London Spy. Huge films like Layer Cake, Pride and Brighton Rock have also used the cafe’s traditional setting for filming.
The menu is very much reflective of a traditional British 'caf' with breakfast dishes including a classic English full breakfast, black pudding, bubble and squeak, hash browns, and fried tomatoes. Throughout the day, the menu features a steak pie with two veg, liver with bacon, chips and peas, and an English favourite of scampi and chips. There are a few lunchtime specials, too, which alternate depending on the day of the week. These include braised steak, chicken curry and fresh fish and chips.
Also on the menu are sandwiches filled with classic fillings of bacon, fried egg and corn beef, along with beef, chicken and veggie burgers, and a range of salads. Chicken and mushroom pies, Cornish pasties and the spaghetti bolognese are also popular choices, and everything is really reasonably priced. For dessert it’s a simple bread and butter pudding with hot, creamy custard or ice cream. Of course, you’ll find all the classic hot drinks on the menu, including a must-have British favourite – a steaming cup of tea.
