About

Patio on Surrey Street in Brighton is just about as cool as it gets in this creative, coastal town - and it gets pretty darn cool. It smacks of 'neighbourhood gem' with a cosy feel bringing together limited space, pendant lighting and some rustic original features like exposed brick walls, which just adds to the atmosphere. Styling is minimal in a design-led, understated way combining a smattering of plants and HAY-style stools next to small tables. If you're looking for a casual place to bring a best friend or date, Patio works perfectly, especially as its walk ins only.

In terms of the dining concept, this roughly covers 'plates and wines' but what's most exciting about this local favourite is its relationship with chefs - both emerging and established. Currently, instead of a full-time head chef, the team are working with a roving selection of chefs to give diners something different every month, or even every few weeks. Right now, for example, its Sylvia’s Delicatessen, a NY-inspired deli with a Mediterranean twist, but that won't last for long.

To get a feel for the vibe head over to Patio's Instagram. Instead of a traditional website, the team share updates, upcoming chef residencies and current menus on social media. Previous menus have included dishes such as Porthilly Oyster with horseradish ponzu, alongside a Ritz Cracker Plate complete with smoked chalk stream trout, dashi cream cheese, hot cucumbers and tobiko, and a scallop bap with bacon and devilled roe kewpie. Personally, we like the sound of the chicken nanban with fried chicken covered in a mirin and soy glaze and tartare sauce. While that dish is long gone now, it speaks for the creativity of what's to come.

As for drinks, you can expect punchy signature cocktails including a pisco paloma, negroni and selection of pet nats, served in trend-led glassware.
