SquareMeal Review of Osteria at the Barbican

Silver Award

Situated in the Grade II-listed Barbican, Osteria serves innovative and classic Italian dishes, with a focus on fresh and seasonal ingredients. The restaurant is a perfect setting for couples, with guests being able to enjoy romantic window-side views of the Barbican water gardens

The bar and restaurant have an intimate and relaxed decor, with low-level lighting and subtle music. The drinks selection includes a diverse range of Negronis and Bellinis, from which we sampled the Kingston, which had a sweeter taste than your standard Negroni thanks to the addition of high-quality Jamaican rum, expertly mixed with Campari and Cinzano Rosso. From the food menu, we were impressed by the grilled sardine dish, which contained a variety of different textures and flavours, the sweet raisins and flaked sour pickled shallots sitting atop the crispy and fresh fish.

To finish, there’s a selection of refreshing boozy sorbets, flavoured with Negroni, Aperol Spritz and Prosecco, and served in a Martini glass. Osteria will appeal to both theatre goers looking for a pre- or post-show meal, as well as those seeking quality Italian food and drinks in a quiet, informal setting.

Pre-theatre meal

First visit to the Barbican. The venue really isn't easy to navigate - especially when leaving in the dark, when I got plain lost - and the lift had broken, but I am able to use stairs so the 2 flights to Osteria were no problem. Loved the trout and herb starter - only gripe would be wanting more fennel, but there was nothing wrong with the portion. The seafood tagliolini was good too, especially with added pepper on the black pasta. The baby octopus were a little chewy but I left nothing. Very good wine. I thought the price a bit steep as £9 was added for the seafood choice - which is high - but I enjoyed a window view and found my meal at Osteria was also a lovely way to spend time before the show, downstairs.

Perfect pre show supper

First time i have been to the Barbican in ages and so opted for this as it was close and had good reviews - but it exceeded them, and even with the show at 7.15 we had lots of time without feeling hurried. The service was great, food tasty, well presented and authentic. thank you
