Glasgow's Oro restaurant is regarded as one of the best Italians in the area, having won a number of awards for their pizza and Italian cuisine. The menu is relatively simple but has everything you could hope for, with plenty of doughy starters such as focaccia stopped with creamy bufala, truffle oil, pistachio, honey and chilli flakes, and breaded arancini with saffron, parmesan and mozzarella. For something a bit heartier, order the meatballs al forno with a slice of garlic bread, or crispy king prawns on a bed of peach and tomato sauce.
The menu then flows straight into the pasta options, two different options for the ever-popular carbonara. Spaghetti carbonara one is made with smoked bacon, a creamy garlic and parmesan sauce and crispy bacon crumbs, whilst number two follows a more authentic Italian recipe with smoked Italian pancetta, egg yolk, pecorino and parmesan cheeses and no cream. Other pasta dishes include the spicy sausage mezze maniche, spicy chicken penne with chicken strips and a cream sauce, spaghetti and meatballs, peppered steak pasta and Oro lasagne with a rich beef bolognese.
There's a great selection for vegetarians, with ricotta ravioli, mushroom tagliatelle and penne arrabbiata. Seafood lovers will enjoy the indulgent spaghetti frutti di mare with a combination of Mediterranean seafood cooked in a saffron tomato sauce with chilli and garlic.
There are plenty of incredible pizza options to choose from, including all the classics and a few more inventive options, but something that Oro offers which you don't get everywhere is the chance to design your own pizza. You start with the base, including options of traditional, thin crust or calzone, before picking your cheese, vegetables, meat, chillies and seafood. The list is rather impressive, including toppings of pear, pine nuts, artichokes, gorgonzola cheese, scamorza, beef bolognese, nduja and a seafood mix.
