If you've recently returned from sunny Portugal and are seriously craving your fix of fresh Portuguese seafood or are simply looking for somewhere special for an evening out, say hello to O Tino. This family run restaurant is owned by Tino and Elizabeth, who found a true passion in their endeavour, and their children Pedro and Denise. Elizabeth was born in Africa, but moved to Portugal in the 1960s, and Tino was born in Madeira in the 1950s. The pair met in Portugal before moving to the UK with their two young children, and opening O Tino’s in 2009. The restaurant has stood firm amongst the test of time that much of the hospitality industry is crumbling to, and remains a favourite of the area – now at the helm of the next generation.
The entradas include suckling pig pastries, codfish cakes and beef croquettes, which are all bite size nibbles, and a simple plate of bread with butter, sardine pate and olives. Bigger starters include grilled Portuguese sausage, a seafood soup, freshly grilled sardines and fresh clams in a white wine sauce. From the main menu you can enjoy sliced pork loin that is juicy and tender, grilled to perfection, or Tino's favourite sirloin steak in a creamy mushroom sauce with your choice of chips or rice. The house special is the arrox de marisco, an exquisite seafood dish with prawns, clams, mussels and a variety of fish tossed with rice. If you're a veggie, fear not, although most of the menu is dedicated to meat and seafood, there are several animal-free dishes to choose from. The vegetarian feijoada is a meat-free stew that takes its inspiration from the Portuguese classic, and blends together beans with fresh veggies, and is served with rice.
