SquareMeal Review of Number 25

Timeless in its simplicity, Number 25 is the very model of a quintessential City wine bar on a modest scale, with friendly staff attending to the unobtrusive, suited professionals who claim stools at the granite-topped octagonal bar or take their places at high chairs by the window. Drinks are provided by the admirable Jamies wine list, which is laid out with exemplary clarity & supplied with helpful tasting notes. To accompany your chosen glass or bottle, there’s a choice of wraps, club sandwiches & the like – roast beef & horseradish, for instance – as well as sharing boards & a handful of no-frills mains such as prawn & smoked salmon salad. The entire bar is also available for private hire.

Having never visited this wine bar before I was keen to try it when friends suggested it earlier this week. The wine and food were good but the evening was spoilt by the resident mouse which kept running out from the corridor into the main bar area! After mentioning this a couple of times to the guy behind the bar, who was not particularly concerned, it somewhat detracted from what was otherwise a good evening. It was nice to be in a bar where the music wasn't so loud that you had to shout to hold a conversation and it wasn't crowded either. Maybe that had something to do with other people having previously experienced the resident rodent…!

I thought my friend had found a useful wine bar in the City for a catch up – good wine list and not too noisy. However, that was until we spotted a mouse running around the bar. We alerted the manager who, to be honest, didn't seem unduly concerned and said he'd contact pest control in the morning. The mouse kept coming into the bar and running around all evening. We suggested to the manager that the last round of drinks be complimentary since we'd had to witness his pest problem all evening. He grudginly took one glass of wine off the bill! The final insult was when we were charged for a double gin when my friend hadn't asked for a double, nor been asked if that's what she wanted. A pity as it seemed like an okay place for a quiet chat but very unlikely to return given the resident mouse and the nonchalent attitude to it by management.
