Serving authentic Malaysian food in the heart of Bayswater, Normah’s is a beloved, family run operation from Normah Abd Hamid and her son Rezi. Normah is an ex-investment banker who decided to ditch her corporate job to open her own restaurant, a no-frills cafe just a stone’s throw from Hyde Park and Queenswater station. Her son Rezi manages front of house, and together they’ve created a genuinely warm, unpretentious venture serving some of the best Malaysian food in London.
Normah’s menu centres around authentic Malaysian cooking, from aromatic Rendangs to fragrant curry laksas. Everything is homemade and uses fresh, seasonal ingredients, with the menu divided into starters, mains and sides. Kick off with its famous roti dhal featuring two pieces of flaky, buttery roti served with slow-cooked lentils and crispy onions. Further starters include crispy chicken bites, marinated chicken wings, and Acar Nenas (Malaysian salad) featuring pineapple, cucumber and raw onion.
For main course, don’t miss Normah’s Nasi Lemak beef rendang featuring slow-cooked beef, crispy anchovies, peanuts, and sambal served with coconut rice. Or you can’t go wrong with a bowl of curry laksa chicken noodles with a boiled egg, tofu, bean sprouts, pak choi and coconut milk. Favourites like nasi goreng, mee goreng and sambal seabass are also up for grabs, with the option to make most dishes vegetarian if you wish. There’s also a dedicated vegan section of the menu where you can enjoy the likes of curry laksa, nasi lemak and assam pedas without the meat or dairy.
Malaysian milk tea (hot or cold) is perfect for washing down your meal, but you’ll also find a wealth of Malaysian specialities such as Bandung (rose syrup with milk) and lemonade with mint leaves to choose from.
