SquareMeal Review of Mint Leaf Lounge

Bronze Award

The dramatically lit bar and its fine cocktails take centre stage at this expansive City Indian, but for all its nightclub posing, Mint Leaf Lounge also serves "delightful" modern food that's worthy of attention. Combining deft spicing with an iconoclastic, seasonal approach to ingredients that's light years from three-pot curry-house clichés, it offers a feast of possibilities – from clever starters such as asparagus tempura with fennel, cumin and coriander or a shakarkandi salad involving roast sweet potato, pepper, pickled beetroot and puffed quinoa to bold mains including tandoori poussin or pot-roast rabbit spiced with fennel, mustard, chilli and onion seeds. Service is "discreet" and the wine list majors on heavyweight vintages at expense-account prices, although there are some spice-friendly Rieslings too. "Swanky" if stygian by night, Mint Leaf lounge is brighter at lunch – though it's hardly a place for sun worshippers.

About Mint Leaf Lounge

The City isn’t short of fine-tuned places to eat and drink - you just have to know where to look. If you work in the area, then Mint Leaf Lounge is a handy spot to have up your sleeve. This Indian restaurant is a little different from your standard curry house and would make an elegant place to head for a business lunch or intimate dinner in the evening. Indeed, the reference to a ‘lounge’ in the restaurant’s title is reflected through cosy and comfortable interiors, sleek dark wooden furniture, leather sofas and low mood lighting.

Diners can opt for either the a la carte or set menus (there are lunch and dinner set options available). Highlights on the menu include kashmiri chicken tikka to start, made with a Kashmiri chilli marinade and served with mint chutney. While main dishes feature Kerala fish curry cooked in coconut, Paneer Kurchan (paneer tossed with onions, tomatoes, green chilli and peppers) and a selection of biryani dishes served with cucumber raita.

Meanwhile, the set menu gets you three courses and a cocktail on arrival for just over £30, which is excellent value and includes most of the dishes on it’s a la carte offering. Finish the meal with a round of mango cheesecake or sorbet to refresh your palate.

Mint Leaf Lounge also boasts a 16m long cocktail bar which serves over 500 spirits prepared however you like. Try one of its many cocktails (there are sections dedicated to gin, rum, whisky, tequila, cognac and vodka-based cocktails), or take a look at its Mint Leaf Specials for the City Girl (raspberry cordial, lemon juice, violette, prosecco) and Tennessee Bee (Jack Daniels, Absinthe, Honey Syrup, Baileys).  You'll struggle to choose from its extensive wine list, with its collection of reds taking the top spot for choice.

Low food quality indian restaurant at very high price

This is one of the worst indian restaurants I've had the misfortune of visiting. The beer served was flat, had total lost its head by the time it was served with foam streaks along the top of the glass, which means it had been sitting around.

We waited about 30m just for these drinks, a further 30m for starters and then another 30m for main courses. The rotis were too hard (think frisbee), the stuffed naan had barely any potato inside and also too hard.

The starters and main courses tasted well below average. £18 for a starter, £21-£28 for a main course, £4.50-£5.50 each for rotis/chapatis? Eye watering prices for food that tastes like a backstreet pakistani tourist trap near Leicester Square.

I'm of Indian heritage, I've eaten at plenty of excellent indian cafes and restaurants, covering all price ranges from cheap to expensive and can make a number of these dishes at home. This place is awful. Don't get taken in my the interior design, the City location or the high prices. None of these factors have any bearing on quality.

A decent (but not more) food offering for the city. Indian influenced (albeit not a real classical indian) menu. Great bar

I had lunch with an old friend for a good catch up and “friday curry with beers”. I worked at Angel Court many years ago, so it was a walk down memory lane for me. For a Friday, it was very empty but we liked the decor and the welcome was lovely. The menu was very interesting, so we ordered with great anticpation. Duck and scallops to start, lamb pepper fry and pork vindaloo to follow. The starters arrived and were fantastic. really well cooked and seasoned with perfectly balanced spices. The main courses kept up the good news, both really, really good. Service was great. As we stuck with beer, I can't comment on the wine. It was a very good meal and I am looking forward to going again. I would not hesitate to have a business lunch there.

What I don't love about this restaurant isn't even worth mentioning. We eat here a lot and the food is absolutely heavenly. It's so far removed from your bog-standard MSG and grease-laden curryhouse nosh that its virtually unrecognisable by comparison. But the food is innovative, using local and seasonal ingredients as well as sustainable fish, producing clean, fresh flavours with the traditional slap of slice that you need to remind you that you are, after all, eating Indian food. Starters are vibrant in both flavour and colour. Bright green chicken tikka with a deliciously creamy coated of herbs and paneer, mackerel and crab cakes spiced to perfection. Main courses come in lots of different guises, both modern with fish fillets on spiced potatoes with spinach and the more classic curries using rich coconut sauces and of course your more classic tomato and spice rich sauces. A great spot for lunch, whether business or not, with an elegant interior and a beautiful bar adjacent to a sleek lounge area. Great cocktails too!
