About

Megans at The Old Bell, St. Albans is a vibrant and quirky Middle Eastern Restaurant located near The Maltings Shopping Centre and the St. Albans Museum and Gallery. This all-day cafe and restaurant is located in a converted pub and has both a lounge and dining area, plus a private dining room. The interior is cosy looking with lantern lighting, fairy lights and fireplaces.

If you’re visiting Megans for dinner you will find a vibrant and tasty looking menu of large and small plates, plus nibbles and sharers. Perhaps you will start things off with a Turkish cheese fondue to share, or a plate of piri piri roasted cauliflower wings. Other small dishes include the cheese fondue croquettes and flatbreads served with harissa hummus.

Main dishes include a selection of grills, as well as open ‘posh’ kebabs, salad bowls and mezze. Perhaps you’ll go for the grilled halloumi served with salad and fries, or the Turkish steak served with chips. If you’re going for a posh kebab you will find a good selection of vibrant and flavourful looking options, such as the open plant based lamb kebab which is made with smoked aubergine, hummus, pomegranate and pistachio, this dish can be made with vegan lamb.

If you have a sweet tooth you will find a range of unique and indulgent desserts, perhaps you'll go for the lemon tart with blueberry compote, or perhaps you’ll want to try the Nutella baked cookie dough to share. If you are looking for vegan and vegetarian dishes you will find a good range of choice on the menu. There are also plenty of lunch options such as the Turkish brunch feast and the vegan brunch made with avocado, mushroom, scrambled tofu and sourdough.

If you are dining with younger guests there is also a children’s menu which features a flatbread pizza, mini mezze and chickenbites. All of which come with a drink and an optional dessert

Terrible food

Probably the worst 'brunch' I have ever been presented with - scrambled eggs arrived on a griddle sitting in a pool of oil, sausage raw, the smallest portion of sweet potatoe fries I have ever seen, Strawberry & Mint juice tepid and tasted exactly like diluted Ribena juice.

My daughter also did not touch most of her brunch and had to remind that waitress that she had asked for an extra portion of bacon which also did not arrive.

I have had brunch at Bills & Hatch in St Albans on many occasions - thought we would try Megans for a change - big mistake and will not be returning.
