SquareMeal Review of Maison Bertaux

Maison Bertaux is Soho to its bones, a patisserie with a 140-year history & a wonky charisma behind its blue & white awnings. There are a handful of seats in the main room, with its upright piano & window displays of home-baked croissants, cream cake & ‘figs’ made of dark chocolate & green marzipan. Pick your spot for proper tea served in plain white china – in true French style, ordering & paying are separate, & table service keeps things genteel. The decor could be described as ‘no-frills frilly’ – there’s a vintage teatime look, but you don’t get the feeling anyone has ever sat down & worried about style. Background music might be accordion tunes or a jazz singer barking out La Marseillaise, & the downstairs room plays hosts to eccentric art events.

About

Maison Bertaux is a historic patisserie and tearoom located on Greek Street in Soho, London. Established in 1871, it is one of the oldest patisseries in the city, offering a slice of Parisian charm in the heart of London. The venue is known for its artisanal pastries and cakes, which are freshly made on-site each day.

The menu focuses on traditional French patisserie, with a selection of tarts, éclairs, and other classic treats. Expect to find fruit-laden creations like strawberry tarts topped with cream, indulgent éclairs filled with custard or cream, and delicate slices of layered cakes adorned with powdered sugar and raspberries. Everything is handmade, with an emphasis on authentic techniques and high-quality ingredients. Maison Bertaux also serves a variety of teas, making it a popular spot for a leisurely afternoon treat.

The setting is intimate and distinctly vintage, with a charmingly eclectic interior that reflects its long history. The space is compact, with a mix of small tables and a cosy, lived-in feel. The patisserie counter, laden with colourful and beautifully crafted pastries, takes centre stage and is a visual treat in itself. The venue is well-suited for a quiet catch-up over tea and cake or a solo indulgence.

Maison Bertaux offers takeaway options for those who prefer to enjoy their pastries elsewhere. The patisserie does not appear to take bookings, so it’s worth arriving early to secure a spot, particularly during peak times.
