SquareMeal Review of Made in Italy

The name and the ‘cheesy cookie-cutter’ decor should tell you what to expect at this dyed-in-the-wool Italian – the original of a small London-wide chain specialising in crisp-crusted, wood-fired pizzas by the metre. Rustic rag-rolled walls, checked tablecloths, terracotta flowerpots and an upstairs terrace with ‘people-watching potential’ set the scene for a ‘cheap and cheerful’ laminated menu of classic combos served in 25cm lengths: ortolana combines mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, olives, grilled aubergines and sun-dried tomatoes, while Fra Rosario involves roasted potatoes, sausage, onion and capers. Otherwise opt for some pasta – perhaps a generous mound of spaghetti vongole with ‘enough clams to keep you busy’. Service is matter-of-fact, but gets the job done – ideal for the target audience of youngsters dining en masse, families with kids and others simply after a quick order-and-go.

change - not for the better
I was on my own and hungry - the old Made in Italy has had a revamp and looked as though it was gastro - vino. I waited nearly 10 minutes for the one (overworked - though there was only one other table) waiter. The menu had almost all small bites on it. I asked for a glass of white wine and one of red, and lasagne al pesto. It took ages, and then the waiter brought me a glass of red. I explained again what I wanted - and he brought a glass of white and almost immediately afterwards the lasagne. I hadn't realised that it would be meatless - perhaps my fault. It was a very small portion and had cubes of potato (potato - with pasta??) and overcooked pieces of greying french beans. Not a pleasant experience and far from the quick, rib-sticking meal that I was after. The wines were no more than junior adequate, which considering the restaurant's new vino - gastro makeover - was a disapointment. Best avoided.

If you haven't worked out the cuisine here from Made in Italy's name, you certainly will as soon as you walk through the door and get hit with the cheesy cookie-cutter Italian decor and the bog-standard laminated menu. The food isn't particularly adventurous as it sticks to “classic” (read “dull”) pizza and pasta dishes. Unfortunately it's not that great in terms of execution either: it's Italian for the English crowd with quantity taking precedence over quality, rather than lovingly crafted versions of authentic dishes. Still, if what you're looking for is something to fill you up and you're not too fussed about it being the meal of your life, then this is not a bad place for a pitstop. Locals seem to be using it as a pizza takeaway joint so it must be fulfilling a role in the otherwise chi-chi Kings Road community. We had a few bits of bread with olive oil to start and some drinkable red and then I had spaghetti a vongole, which was pretty much what you'd expect: a mound of marginally overcooked pasta, swimming in tomato sauce and served with enough clams to keep you busy. We pushed off sharpish to catch a film but I can't imagine lingering here for long by choice anyway. Service seemed good enough to me, with the only complaint being the swiftness of delivery suggests that pasta dishes/sauces are not made fresh to order. It's in the “cheap n cheerful” category coming in at under £20 a head. I'd probably come back if I needed feeding pre-film again but the upstairs terrace with its people-watching potential might make this a better bet in summer.

The pizzas from here are absolutely outstanding – easily restaurant quality, and I mean a proper italian restaurant not a chain pizza place.

The worst restuarant I have ever visited. The service was nothing short of diabolical – Waited 1 hr for some garlic bread! Noticed a lot of other tables were suffering from poor/slow service too so we asked for the bill. Another 20 minute wait to finally get the drinks bill – not on the house, was charged and barely appologised to. Certainly not a place to recommend.
