Set on Waterloo's buzzing Lower Marsh, Lower Wine Bar brings a relaxed, Parisian-inspired charm to the neighbourhood, pairing carefully curated wines with an intimate, candlelit setting. Designed for slow evenings and shared bottles, the space combines the feel of a classic European wine bar with the energy of a modern London neighbourhood spot.
The bar features a cosy ground-floor dining space with a working cellar and bottle shop below, offering both drink in and takeaway options. During the winter months, the cellar rooms are also used for wine tastings and bespoke events, creating an immersive experience for guests wanting to explore the wine list in more detail.
Alongside the wine, Lower offers a concise blackboard menu centred around thoughtful, ingredient-led small plates designed to complement the evolving wine selection. While Lower’s menu remains relaxed and approachable, it includes thoughtful ingredient led combinations that complement the wine. Its recent selection included dishes such as anchovies with lemon, asparagus with pecorino, mortadella, and generously buttered sourdough. Desserts are equally simple yet indulgent, with its latest list including only the classic, yet unbeatable chocolate mousse.
Lower Wine Bar was established by friends Alex Pitt, Blaise Coley and Skye Alejandro, who all share hospitality backgrounds and a passion for great wine. Their curated wine list focuses on small producers and ever-changing discoveries, with the team personally visiting many of the suppliers and vineyards they work with. The result is a fluid, constantly evolving list of artisanal wines.
Located moments away from the National Theatre and Waterloo station, Lower has become a popular destination for pre-theatre drinks, late night classes or relaxing evenings that stretch late into the night.
