SquareMeal Review of Land

Bronze Award

Formerly known as 1847 Birmingham, this restaurant originally opened its doors back in 2013 and helped to bring vegetarian dining to the West Midlands. In 2019, the restaurant was bought by its head chef and sous chef – Tony Cridland and Adrian Luck respectively – who had been at the helm of the kitchen for four years.

Now that they have full ownership of the space and have renamed it Land, the pair continue to serve a plant-focused menu which showcases the versatility of vegetables. Diners can choose between a great value two- or three-course set menu (£22/28), or instead opt for the chef’s menu (£40), which comprises six courses along with the option of an additional wine pairing.

The menus at Land are constantly evolving, but dishes you might encounter on your visit include watermelon served with polenta, chilli and coriander, a ricotta dumpling with tomato basil and chard, or an Asian-influenced turnip cake with water spinach, sesame and XO sauce.

To finish your meal on a sweet note, you can order the likes of a chocolate and orange torte or slow-roasted strawberries served with shortbread biscuits.

Although the restaurant describes itself as ‘plant-focused’, that doesn’t mean the menu is entirely vegan or vegetarian. Instead, the restaurant’s menu is mostly vegetarian, with a few dishes containing fish or meat (all of which are clearly labelled). However, both vegan and gluten-free dishes are available upon request.

Land’s dining room is an intimate, laid-back affair which features plain white walls and wooden accents, with a small coffee counter/bar found in the corner of the room. The restaurant also boasts a very handy location in the smart Great Western Arcade, which houses a range of independent retailers. It’s right behind House of Fraser, too, should you need refuelling after an afternoon browsing the shops.

About

Land is a contemporary fine dining restaurant located in the heart of Birmingham's historic Great Western Arcade. Specialising in innovative, plant-focused cuisine, Land is celebrated for its creative vegetarian and predominantly vegan tasting menus that highlight seasonal produce and bold global flavours. Co-owned and led by talented Head Chefs Adrian Luck and Tony Cridland, the restaurant has gained recognition for its inventive approach to plant-based dining, earning a place in the prestigious Michelin Guide as one of the UK's standout vegetarian and vegan establishments.

The menus at Land are carefully curated to showcase the finest seasonal ingredients, with options for five- or eight-course tasting experiences. Each dish is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, offering diners a journey through diverse culinary traditions. With influences often drawn from pan-Asian cuisines, dishes such as char siu carrot and sake lees exemplify the restaurant's ability to merge flavour, technique, and presentation seamlessly, something that is crucial to execute when creating truly memorable meat-free meals.

The dining space itself is an elegant yet understated venue, thoughtfully designed to create a welcoming and sophisticated atmosphere. Set within a Grade II-listed Victorian shopping arcade, the interior features muted tones of grey and green that harmonise with the historic surroundings, offering an intimate and tranquil setting for guests to enjoy their meals.

Land's commitment to redefining plant-based cuisine has garnered widespread acclaim, including from Jay Rayner, who described it as "vegan cooking to file under thrilling." The restaurant’s philosophy centres on making plant-based dining exciting, accessible, and undeniably delicious.

Whether you’re a dedicated vegan or simply a lover of exceptional food, Land provides a dining experience that is both refined and approachable. With its focus on sustainability, innovation, and unparalleled quality, Land continues to set a benchmark for plant-based fine dining in the UK.

Amazing!

My husband took me to Land on 2nd September as a treat and the whole experience was fantastic. The menu is so cleverly put together, we had 3 courses and all of the food was delicious. Service was 5*, I can't rate this place enough and look forward to our next visit. Land really deserves a Michelin Star!
